How a concrete crew became an outdoor living company

The family has been pouring valley concrete since 1 April 1980. For most of the years since, that meant flatwork: driveways, patios, walkways, slabs and, more than anything else in this valley, pool decks. Robert Salas built the reputation, and the next generation grew up on the jobs, took over the day to day, and incorporated Salas Concrete Inc in 2004.

What changed is what customers started asking for. People stopped calling about a patio and started calling about a backyard. They wanted the slab, and the cover over it, and the island to cook on, and the fire pit, and the turf, and the wall holding the slope back, and somebody to make all of it land in the right order. Doing only the concrete meant handing the rest to somebody else and hoping.

So Salas Outdoor is the same family, the same crews and the same phone number, taking on the whole yard. Salas Concrete is still the concrete arm and still the name on 29 five star Google reviews going back to 2019. The difference is what we will now put on one contract for you.

Why we still pour our own flatwork

Almost every outdoor living company in this valley subcontracts its concrete. That is a reasonable business decision and it is also the reason so many yards fail in the same way: the sub is gone by the time the problem shows up, and the problem is always underneath everything else.

We kept the crew. It means the slab under a cover is thickened where the posts land, the pad under an outdoor kitchen has the gas and power sleeves cast into it, and the control joints are cut where they belong instead of straight through the middle of the seating area. None of that is glamorous and all of it is the difference between a yard that ages well and one that does not.

It also means the base work, the reinforcement and the joint layout are decided by the same crew that pours the slab, not split across two companies pointing fingers at each other if something moves.

Show up when we said we would, build it the way you pictured it, leave the yard cleaner than we found it, and charge you for what we actually poured.

Our approach, in the words customers keep using

The people you will actually meet

Ownership runs the estimates in person. Whoever comes out walks the yard, asks how you use the space, and designs with you rather than handing you a catalogue. We aim to make that visit happen the same day you call, or within 24 hours if it is not a weekend. It is also the reason money comes back when a job uses less footage than the allowance you were quoted.

Ruben handles design and consultation. On pool deck replacements and demolition work he is often the first person you meet, he formulates the plan, and he stays on the job through to the finished deck.

Robert Salas is still part of the concrete side of the business and the reason the family trade goes back to 1980. Ashley Salas co-owns Salas Outdoor and leads design work and client communication on pool deck projects.

The people you will actually meet

Not a commission salesperson working from a tablet

Ownership or Ruben walks your yard, not a stranger from a call center. Here is who is actually on the crew.

What we will not tell you

There are numbers we could put on this page and will not, because we cannot show you where they came from. We do not publish a pool count. We do not publish a headcount. We have no awards to list, so we do not list any.

What we will give you is the stuff you can go and check: a Google profile with 29 reviews and a 5.0 average, 40 faves from neighbors on Nextdoor, a corporation filed with the California Secretary of State in 2004, and 46 years of valley word of mouth that has never needed a billboard.

If you want to talk to somebody who has hired us, ask on the walk through. We will put you in touch with a customer near you.

How it works

What hiring us actually looks like

From the first phone call to the walk through, with no step you have to chase us for.

  1. Day 1

    Reach out

Send the form and tell us roughly what you have in mind for the yard. You do not need a drawing or a finished idea, a rough sketch on your phone is plenty to start with.

  2. Day 1 to 3

On site walk and 3D design

We come out, walk the yard with you, talk through layout and finishes, and plan around how you actually use the space. We aim to make that visit the same day you call, or within 24 hours on weekdays. Before anything is built, we put together a 3D rendering of the design so you can see the finished yard and ask for changes while it is still just a drawing.

  3. Within days

    Free written estimate

One clear written price, with no surprise line items later. If the finished job uses less footage than the allowance, that money comes back to you.

  4. Scheduled

    Demo and prep

Old concrete comes out, roots and obstacles are dealt with, base and forms go in, and slope, joints and drains are set before anything is poured. Drainage is designed in, not fixed afterwards.

  5. Build week

    Build

Pour, finish, and install the hardscape, turf, shade, fire and kitchen elements. Most single element jobs finish in a day. One 380 sq ft pour was done in under 9 hours ahead of forecast rain.

  6. Same day

    Clean up and walk through

The site is cleared of debris before the crew leaves, and you walk the finished yard with us. One customer wrote that nobody would have known their house had been a construction zone for two days.

  7. After

    Cure and stand behind it

Concrete is given the time it needs to cure properly, and we stay reachable. Customers come back years later for the next phase of the yard, which is the part we are proudest of.

In short

Nine things that make the difference

The short version of everything above, if you would rather not read the long one.

  • An outdoor living contractor with its own concrete crew

Most outdoor living companies subcontract the flatwork, which is the part that fails. The Salas family has been pouring valley concrete since April 1980 and still pours its own.

  • One company for the whole yard

Concrete, pavers, turf, walls, shade, fire, kitchens, landscaping and the pool deck, on one contract and one schedule, instead of you coordinating five trades yourself.

  • Pool deck work is the single most reviewed thing we do

New decks, resurfacing, coping and repairs around a pool you already have, poured with the same base discipline as everything else we build.

  • Ownership runs your estimate

We come out ourselves, usually the same day you call or within 24 hours on weekdays, and design with you rather than handing you a catalogue of packages to pick from.

  • See it in 3D before we build it

We put together a 3D rendering of your yard as part of the design, so you can see the finished layout and change what you do not like before a single yard of concrete is poured.

  • Honest billing

Customers write reviews specifically about being credited money back when a job used less square footage than the allowance they were quoted.

  • It does not crack

One customer waited three years on purpose before reviewing, to find out. Roughly 3,000 sq ft poured, not one crack.

  • The site is left clean

Debris cleanup before the crew leaves is mentioned in review after review. It is the single most repeated line in 29 five star Google reviews.

  • Family owned since 1980

Robert Salas started it, the family still runs it, and 46 years of valley word of mouth sits behind the name. 5.0 on Google across 29 reviews.

About the company, answered

Who owns it, who shows up on the day, and how the pool deck side of the business works.

Is Salas Outdoor the same company as Salas Concrete?

Yes. Salas Concrete Inc is the legal entity and the concrete arm, and it is the name on every Google review going back to 2019. Salas Outdoor is the name for the whole backyard side of the work: covers, kitchens, fire, turf, walls, planting and pools alongside the flatwork. Same family, same crews, same phone number.

Who comes out to look at my yard?

Ownership, or Ruben on pool deck and demolition work. Not a commission salesperson working from a tablet. They walk the space with you, talk through the layout and the finishes, and price what you actually want built. We strive to make that visit happen the same day you call, or within 24 hours if it is not a weekend.

How long has the family been doing this?

The family started pouring valley concrete on 1 April 1980, which makes it 46 years. Robert Salas built the business, and it was incorporated as Salas Concrete Inc in 2004.

Do you work on commercial projects?

The work is residential first and that is where nearly all of it sits. If you have something commercial in the valley, call and describe it. We would rather tell you honestly whether it suits our crews than take it on and learn the answer halfway through.

Pool deck work, from a new deck to resurfacing and repair, is part of the same business. Start with the pool deck remodeling page.
