Backyard remodeling and pool decks in Tulare, CA

Tulare's newer lots are built to entertain a crowd, and the concrete underneath every part of that yard is poured by our own crew.

Population about 70,945. Estimates are free and we come out ourselves, often the same day you call or within 24 hours if it is not a weekend.

Salas Outdoor builds whole backyards in Tulare: patios and covers, pavers, retaining and seat walls, fire features, outdoor kitchens, turf and landscaping, plus the concrete underneath all of it. Around an existing pool that means new decks, resurfacing, coping and repair work, planned as part of the same yard instead of a separate project handed to a separate contractor.

Tulare also has the yards to justify a full remodel. The subdivisions that went up on the south and east sides over the last twenty five years came with larger lots and modern floor plans that open onto the backyard, which is exactly the setup where a covered outdoor room and a proper kitchen island earn their keep.

What a Tulare backyard is usually asking for

This is a working agricultural city, and it shows in the way people use their yards. The World Ag Expo brings a hundred thousand people to the International Agri-Center every February and half the city hosts somebody during that week, so entertaining space is not a luxury item here, it is how the calendar works. The projects we are asked for most in Tulare reflect that: a covered area big enough for a real table, a built-in barbecue island so the cooking happens outside, and enough finished surface that thirty people can stand around without anybody on the dirt.

The newer south and east side lots give us room to do it properly. There is usually space for a pool, a deck with actual circulation around it, a shaded dining zone and a turf area, without any of the four crowding the others. On the older streets closer to Zumwalt Park and downtown, the lots are smaller and the answer is different: one well placed covered patio, a compact pool or a spa, and hardscape that makes a modest yard feel finished rather than filled.

  • Larger south and east side lots with room for a pool, a deck, shade and turf on one plan
  • Entertaining space sized for a crowd, not for a bistro table
  • Built-in kitchens and bar tops so the cooking and the guests stay outside
  • Compact pool and spa layouts for the older, tighter lots near downtown

Pool deck remodeling and work around the pool you already have

Tulare has a lot of pools that were excellent in 1985 and now have a deck showing it: dated exposed aggregate that has lost its stone, cracked coping, and a slab that has cracked or settled around the equipment pad. We rebuild the deck, not the pool itself, so the shell, the plaster and the equipment stay exactly where the pool trades left them while the concrete around it gets rebuilt to match.

New decks, resurfacing on a sound existing slab, cantilever coping, expansion joints and section repair around a skimmer or other fixed equipment are all concrete work, which is the trade we perform. Plenty of Tulare jobs are a deck and nothing more, and that is exactly as it should be. If the shell and the equipment are still doing their job, nobody needs to spend money on them just because the concrete around them has aged out, and we will say so at the estimate rather than after the deposit.

  • New pool decks poured, resurfaced or repaired around a pool you already have
  • Cantilever coping, expansion joints and skimmer detailing
  • Resurfacing and cool coatings on a structurally sound existing deck
  • Section repair matched to the existing finish, without disturbing fixed equipment

Drainage on a pool deck, decided before the concrete arrives

A pool deck is the hardest flatwork in a backyard to get right, because it is surrounded by things whose height is already fixed. The coping sets one elevation, the house pad sets another, the skimmer lid has to finish flush and the yard beyond has to take the water. So the fall is worked out on paper and on the ground before any forms go in, not adjusted with a trowel on the day. We set a consistent drop away from the water, keep it off the house, and give the runoff a defined destination.

Control joints then go where the slab genuinely wants to move: at inside corners, around the skimmer, at the ends of the long runs, spaced to suit the thickness of the pour. Expansion material separates the deck from the pool shell and from the house, because those three things move independently and pretending otherwise is what cracks a deck at the coping. Deck drains and channel drains go where the grade cannot carry it, typically on the house side of the pool and in the narrow runs between the water and a wall.

Then we test it rather than assume it. Water goes on the finished surface and we watch where it stands, because a hose will tell you in five minutes what a wet winter would take months to show. If there is a low spot, it gets fixed before we hand the yard over. If water starts sitting somewhere it should not after you have lived with the deck through a season, we come back out. That is a standing commitment on every deck we pour in Tulare, and it is the reason we spend the extra time on grade stakes at the start.

Valley heat, hardpan and the permits a Tulare pool brings

Tulare summers sit at or above 105 degrees for weeks, and on a pool deck that turns a finish choice into a comfort decision. Dark colors and dense smooth surfaces get hot enough to keep bare feet off them, so we steer pool decks toward lighter tones, textured broom finishes, exposed aggregate washes and cool coating systems that reflect more than they absorb. It is a conversation worth having before you pick a color from a sample board indoors in March.

The ground is valley hardpan, dense and unforgiving, so it gets excavated and compacted properly rather than worked around. We also watch the pour window through the worst of the summer, because concrete placed at the peak of an afternoon finishes badly regardless of the crew. On the permit side, a new pool in the City of Tulare means plan review, barrier and safety requirements and inspections, and county ground goes through Tulare County instead. We carry that process rather than handing you a list of offices to call.

How the estimate and the build actually run

We run the estimate in person. Whoever comes out to Tulare walks the property, talks through the deck, the shade and what the whole thing means for the budget, then gives you one clear written price. We aim for that visit to happen the same day, or within 24 hours if it is not a weekend, and the estimate is free. There are no line items that appear later, and when a job uses less footage than the allowance we quoted, the difference is credited back to you.

The concrete side of the company has been doing this since April 1980, 46 years under the same family, with a 5.0 rating across 29 Google reviews to show for it. Most single element pours finish in a day, and the crew clears its debris before leaving, which is the line that comes up in review after review.

Tulare questions, answered

What we build in Tulare, how quickly we get there, and what it costs to find out.

Can Salas build a new pool in Tulare?

No, we do the concrete around a pool you already have: new decks, resurfacing, coping and repair. We do not build new pools or perform interior pool work anywhere, including Tulare.

We host people during World Ag Expo week. Can a project be finished before February?

Usually, if we are talking in good time. A patio, a deck or a driveway pour is often a single day of work once the prep is done, and a covered patio with a kitchen island runs a few weeks. Tell us the date you are working toward at the estimate and we will schedule backwards from it.

Which pool deck finish stays coolest in a Tulare August?

Lighter colors first, texture second. An exposed aggregate wash, a broom finish or a cool coating system in a light tone will be noticeably kinder to bare feet than a dark, dense, smooth surface, and all three hold up better when wet. Stamped concrete works well too as long as the color stays out of the deep end of the chart. We will walk you through samples outdoors, in sunlight, not under a showroom light.

    Homeowner, driveway and pool

Salas Concrete did the pool and a driveway for our house 3 years ago. Why am i reviewing them just now? Because concrete takes a while to crack. I am happy to say that with approximately 3,000 square feet poured, there is not a single crack in my concrete and i am very satisfied with the job performed by Salas Concrete.

    Homeowner, pool deck and driveway

Salas concrete is great. They did my pool deck and then a long driveway and pad. They were always on time, honest and professional. Their concrete finishers are some of the best in the Central Valley. Aaron is great to work with.

    Homeowner, exposed aggregate pool deck

I recently had my 47 year old exposed aggregate pool deck redone by Salas Concrete. From my initial consultation with Ruben, to the finished project of the deck remodel, the attention to detail by Ruben, Aaron and the entire crew was outstanding. I was impressed with their professionalism and work ethic. The deck looks awesome and I'm very happy with my new look!
