Pool deck remodeling and work around the pool you already have

New decks, deck resurfacing, coping and repairs around a pool you already have. This is concrete work, and it is the single most reviewed thing we do.

Pool decks are the hardest flatwork to get right. A deck has to shed water away from the pool rather than into it, stay walkable barefoot on a 105 degree afternoon, and hold up to chlorine, sunscreen and twenty valley summers without falling apart.

This category covers concrete work around a pool you already have: new decks, deck resurfacing, coping and repairs. It does not cover new pool construction or interior pool work such as plaster, tile or equipment, which is a different trade than the one we perform.

New pool decks

A new deck gets the same base discipline as any other slab we pour, plus the details specific to a pool: slope planned to carry water away from the water's edge, cantilever coping detailed at the bond beam, and control joints placed where they will not run across a heavily walked path around the pool.

Exposed aggregate is the most common finish here because it stays cooler barefoot and grips better wet than a smooth troweled surface, though broom finish, stamped and colored options are all real choices depending on how the rest of the yard is finished.

Deck resurfacing

Not every tired deck needs demolition. If the concrete underneath is structurally sound, with no significant settlement and no full depth cracking, an overlay gives you a new surface, a new color and better heat performance for considerably less than a full replacement. That is often the right call on a deck that has simply lost its finish over time.

Replacement is the honest answer once the slab has moved, holds water because the original slope was wrong, or has been lifted by tree roots. Resurfacing over those problems buys a couple of summers before the same failure shows back up through the new surface, and we would rather tell you that at the walk through than take the easier job.

Coping, drainage and repair around fixed equipment

Cracked coping, decking cracked around a skimmer, or a deck section damaged by root intrusion are common repair calls. We can cut out and repour a damaged section without disturbing the skimmer or other fixed equipment, matching the existing finish rather than leaving a visible patch.

Before we call a deck finished we run water across it and watch where it goes. Anything standing where it should not gets corrected before we leave. Slope, joints and drains are planned before the pour, not fixed afterward.

Pool Deck Remodeling questions, answered

What it costs, how long it takes, and what we need from you before we start.

Do you build new pools?

No. We do the concrete around a pool: new decks, resurfacing, coping, drainage and repairs. Interior pool work and new pool construction are a different trade than the one we perform.

Can my pool deck be resurfaced instead of replaced?

Often, yes. If the slab is structurally sound with no significant settlement or full depth cracking, an overlay gives you a new surface and better heat performance for much less than a rebuild. If the deck has moved, holds water from bad original slope, or has been lifted by tree roots, replacement is the honest answer.

What is the coolest pool deck surface for a Fresno summer?

A light colored, textured surface. Light exposed aggregate and light broom finishes are the two most comfortable poured options. Dark, smooth and heavily sealed surfaces are the ones that get punishing at four in the afternoon.

Can you repair a deck without disturbing the skimmer?

Yes. We cut out the damaged section only, work around fixed equipment such as the skimmer, and pour a new section with a matched finish rather than replacing the whole deck.
