What pool deck resurfacing costs
As of 2026, resurfacing a pool deck in Fresno and Clovis runs about $6 to $12 per square foot for an overlay or a textured cool coating, and about $9 to $16 per square foot for a stamped or knockdown overlay with color. A typical 700 square foot deck therefore lands somewhere around $4,200 to $11,200. Replacing the deck entirely, which means demolition and a new pour, runs closer to $14 to $22 per square foot.
Resurfacing is the cheaper path and it is the right one only when the concrete underneath is sound. That is the whole judgement, and it is not one you can make from a photo. We come out and look, and the estimate is free. The owner does the walk himself, and valley homeowners can usually get that visit the same day, or within 24 hours if it is not a weekend. If the deck is not a candidate for an overlay, you will hear that at the walk rather than after you have paid for one.
- Textured cool coating over sound concrete: about $6 to $10 per square foot
- Cementitious overlay with color: about $8 to $13 per square foot
- Stamped or knockdown overlay: about $9 to $16 per square foot
- Crack repair and section replacement before resurfacing: priced per location
- Full tear out and new deck: about $14 to $22 per square foot

Resurfacing or replacing, and how we tell
An overlay is a thin layer laid over the top of what is already there, so everything the old deck does, the new surface will do too. If the slab has settled, if a crack runs all the way through and the two sides sit at different heights, if sections rock underfoot, or if the deck drains toward the house, an overlay will look beautiful for a season and then telegraph every one of those problems straight back through.
What we are checking on the walk is whether the concrete is structurally sound, whether cracks are surface level or full depth, whether the slab has lifted at the coping, and where water goes. Hairline cracking, spalling, a tired exposed aggregate finish that has lost its stone, or a deck that is simply too hot and too dated: all of that resurfaces beautifully. Movement does not. We will tell you which one you have, including when the answer costs you more.
The coating and overlay options
Kool Deck style cool coatings are the original valley answer and they still work. A textured acrylic or cementitious layer goes over the sound slab, gives a slip resistant surface, and in a light color runs meaningfully cooler than bare gray concrete. They are the cheapest option, they refresh a dated deck completely, and they need recoating eventually, which is the honest trade. How long a coating lasts depends on sun, traffic and pool chemistry, and a deck that gets rinsed down now and then holds up a good while.
Micro toppings and cementitious overlays are thicker, tougher and take color more convincingly. A knockdown texture gives you grip with a soft look. A stamped overlay can put a stone or slate pattern on a deck that was plain gray for thirty years, at a fraction of what a new stamped pour costs. Whichever one goes down, surface prep decides the lifespan: the old surface gets ground or shot blasted, contaminants and old failing coatings come off, and the bond coat goes on properly. An overlay that was not prepped correctly will lift, and no amount of good product fixes that.
- Cool coating in a light color for the cheapest, coolest refresh
- Micro topping for a harder wearing surface that takes color well
- Knockdown texture for grip without a heavy pattern
- Stamped overlay when you want a stone or slate look over plain gray
- Grinding or shot blasting first, every time, or the bond fails
Cracks, skimmers and the surgical work
Most decks we resurface need some repair first, and that repair is where the experience shows. A crack gets chased, cleaned and filled, or the section gets cut out and replaced with a clean saw cut joint that the overlay can then run over. Around a pool, the work is close quarters: skimmers, returns, autofill boxes, light niches and coping all sit in the deck and none of them can be disturbed.
We cut around fixed equipment surgically and replace only what needs replacing, which keeps the number down and keeps the pool in service. Pool deck remodels, resurfacing, coping and repair around existing equipment are the jobs our customers write about most, and a lot of them were told by someone else that the whole deck had to come out. Often it did not, and the honest version of the job costs a fraction of the quote they were holding when they called us.

Drainage is usually the real reason to resurface
When a homeowner calls us about a pool deck, the surface is what they noticed and the water is usually what actually went wrong. Decks that were poured flat, or sloped toward the house, or with drains in the wrong places, hold water after a rain and after every pool party. That standing water stains the surface, breaks down coatings early, and makes a deck slick in exactly the spot people walk.
So slope, joints and drains get planned before anything is applied, not corrected after. We set the fall away from the house and the pool where the grade allows, place deck drains where the grade cannot do it alone, and cut or honor expansion joints so the deck can move without tearing the new surface. Before we call the job finished we check the deck for standing water and fix anywhere it sits.
- Fall set away from the house and off the deck, before any coating goes down
- Deck drains and channel drains placed where the grade needs them
- Expansion joints at the coping and across long runs, carried through the overlay
- Surface flood tested and checked for standing water before sign off
Heat underfoot, and what color does to it
This is the valley, and barefoot comfort decides more pool deck choices than looks do. On a 105 degree July afternoon in Fresno, a dark gray or charcoal deck in full sun can reach surface temperatures well over 150 degrees, which is genuinely painful for the ten feet between the slider and the water. A light tan, sand or bone colored surface in the same sun can run twenty to thirty degrees cooler, and a textured cool coating in a light color is cooler again because the texture holds less contact area against your foot.
That is why we steer people toward light colors on the walking zones and save the darker tones for borders, bands and accents where nobody stands. It is also why resurfacing is often the fastest fix for a deck that is structurally fine and simply unbearable in summer. You are not just buying a new look, you are buying back the middle of the afternoon. Families in Clovis and Sanger tell us that is the change they notice first, well before anyone comments on how the deck looks.
How the free estimate works
The owner comes out, usually the same day or within 24 hours if it is not a weekend, walks the deck, checks the cracks, the coping and where the water goes, and gives you one clear written price covering the repair work.
Pool deck work is not territory bound for us. We resurface, repair and replace decks across Fresno, Clovis, Madera, Sanger, Selma and Reedley, and on out to Visalia, Hanford and Lemoore. The family has been pouring valley concrete since April 1980 and the Google rating is 5.0 across 29 reviews. Send the form and we will come look at it. Tell us roughly how old the deck is and what bothers you about it, and we will bring you the right answer rather than the most expensive one.
Questions we get about this
The follow ups this subject raises once somebody starts pricing it for real.
Can any pool deck be resurfaced?
No, and anyone who says yes has not looked at yours. An overlay bonds to the existing slab, so it inherits every problem that slab has. Sound concrete with surface cracking, spalling or a dated finish resurfaces beautifully. A deck that has settled, has full depth cracks with height difference between the sides, or drains the wrong way needs the movement fixed first, or replacing.
How long does a pool deck resurfacing take?
For a typical 700 square foot deck with modest repairs, plan on two to four days of work plus cure and cure time before you use it. Repairs, section replacement and drainage corrections add days. We give you the schedule with the written estimate, and the pool stays in service through most of it because we work around the skimmer, returns and coping rather than tearing everything out.
Will resurfacing make my deck cooler?
Usually yes, if you go lighter. A light tan or bone textured coating over a dark gray deck can drop surface temperature by twenty to thirty degrees on a July afternoon in Fresno, because color drives heat absorption and texture reduces contact with your foot. Keep the dark tones for borders and accent bands where nobody stands barefoot.
